Why We Only Scent With Essential Oils and Why It Matters
Why We Only Scent With Essential Oils and Why It Matters
Fragrance is one of the most loaded words in the beauty and personal care industry. It appears on ingredient lists as a single word, suggesting simplicity, but it is anything but. At TATTVE, every product that carries a scent is scented exclusively with pure essential oils. Here is why that decision matters for your skin, your health, and your home.
What "Fragrance" Actually Means on a Label
Under current FDA regulations, manufacturers are not required to disclose the individual components of a fragrance blend. The word fragrance on an ingredient list can legally represent a mixture of anywhere from a few to several hundred distinct chemical compounds, most of them synthetic, many of them untested for long-term safety, and none of them individually disclosed to the consumer.
The International Fragrance Association (IFRA) maintains a list of over 3,000 ingredients that can be used under the umbrella term fragrance. These include phthalates, which are used to help scent adhere to skin and have been associated with hormonal disruption. They include synthetic musks, some of which accumulate in body tissue. They include aldehydes, ketones, and a range of petrochemical derivatives that have no place in a product you apply to your skin every day.
This is not a fringe concern. The Environmental Working Group (EWG) consistently rates fragrance as one of the highest-risk ingredients in personal care products, citing allergenicity, endocrine disruption, and lack of transparency.
The Case for Essential Oils
Essential oils are concentrated aromatic compounds extracted directly from plants through steam distillation, cold pressing, or CO2 extraction. They are complex, living compounds that carry the full biochemical signature of the plant they come from. And unlike synthetic fragrance, they do more than just smell good.
Lavender has well-documented calming and anti-inflammatory properties. Studies have shown it can reduce cortisol levels and support relaxation when inhaled, making it genuinely functional in a Rest-oriented product, not just decorative.
Tea tree is one of the most researched essential oils in existence, with strong evidence supporting its antibacterial, antifungal, and antimicrobial activity. It earns its place in our Reset line not just for scent but for function.
Frankincense has been used in traditional medicine for centuries and is supported by modern research for its skin-regenerative properties, including its ability to support cellular turnover and reduce the appearance of aging.
Cedarwood has been shown to have calming, grounding effects on the nervous system and carries mild antimicrobial properties that complement its role in our Reset formulations.
Rose is rich in antioxidants and has been used in skincare for millennia for its ability to hydrate, soothe, and support skin barrier function.
When you smell a TATTVE product, you are not smelling a lab-created approximation of a flower. You are smelling the plant itself, in concentrated form, doing the work it was designed by nature to do.
The Transparency Difference
Every essential oil we use is listed individually on our ingredient labels. You will never see the word fragrance on a TATTVE product. If a scent is present, its source is named, lavender, cedarwood, frankincense, rose, exactly as it appears in the formula.
This is not just a regulatory choice. It is a statement of values. We believe you have the right to know exactly what you are putting on your skin, breathing in while you shower, and diffusing through your home via a candle. Transparency is not a marketing feature at TATTVE. It is the baseline.
A Note on Synthetic Fragrance in the Home
The candle and home fragrance industry relies almost entirely on synthetic fragrance. Fragrance oils, which are what the vast majority of scented candles use, are synthetic compounds designed to approximate natural scents at a fraction of the cost. When burned, these compounds are released into the air in your home, where you breathe them continuously during use.
Our Pure Beeswax Candles use only pure essential oils for scent. The same transparency we apply to what goes on your skin, we apply to what goes into your air.
Why This Matters for Sensitive Skin
Synthetic fragrance is the leading cause of contact dermatitis and skin sensitization in personal care products. If you have ever had a reaction to a lotion, body wash, or candle and could not identify the cause, synthetic fragrance was likely the culprit. Because individual fragrance components do not have to be disclosed, it is nearly impossible to identify and avoid the specific compound causing the reaction.
Essential oils can also cause sensitivity in rare cases and at high concentrations, which is why we are careful about dilution rates in every formula. But the difference is that every ingredient is named, and if a sensitivity occurs, it can be identified.
The TATTVE Commitment
We will never use synthetic fragrance in any TATTVE product. Every scent in our line is created from a thoughtfully chosen blend of pure essential oils, selected not only for how they smell but for what they do. Scent, for us, is never decoration. It is intention.
When you choose TATTVE, you are choosing to know exactly what is in every product you bring into your life. That is the only kind of beauty we are interested in making.
