Why Pure Beeswax Is the Only Candle Worth Burning
Why Pure Beeswax Is the Only Candle Worth Burning
Most candles are not what they appear to be. The soft glow, the comforting scent, the sense of ritual all feel wholesome. But what is actually burning in your home matters more than most people realize. At TATTVE, we made the decision to use only 100% pure beeswax, single-sourced from a trusted USA bee farm, and it was not a difficult choice once we understood what the alternatives actually are.
What Is Paraffin Wax and Why It Matters
Paraffin is the most common candle wax on the market. It is inexpensive, widely available, and produces a clean-looking white candle. It is also a byproduct of petroleum refining, the same industry that produces gasoline and diesel fuel. When paraffin burns, it releases a cocktail of chemicals including toluene and benzene, both of which are known carcinogens. The black soot you see on jar lids and walls after burning a paraffin candle is not just aesthetically unpleasant. It is a sign of incomplete, chemically complex combustion happening in your living space.
What About Soy?
Soy candles are often marketed as a natural, eco-friendly alternative to paraffin, and they are certainly a step up. But the picture is more complicated than the marketing suggests. The vast majority of soy wax used in candles comes from genetically modified soybeans, and the United States is the world's largest producer of GMO soy. Soy wax also requires significant chemical processing, including hydrogenation, to achieve the solid form used in candles. And because pure soy wax is soft and prone to surface imperfections, most commercial soy candles are actually blended with paraffin without any requirement to disclose this on the label.
Why Beeswax Is Different
Beeswax is one of the oldest and most revered natural materials in human history. It is produced by honeybees and has been used for candles, cosmetics, and preservation for thousands of years. Unlike paraffin or soy, beeswax requires no chemical processing. It is a natural wax in its purest form.
Beeswax has a higher melting point than paraffin or soy, which means it burns more slowly and completely, producing significantly less soot and fewer combustion byproducts. The flame is brighter, warmer, and closer in spectrum to natural sunlight. Because of its density and high melting point, a beeswax candle burns up to 2 to 5 times longer than a comparable paraffin candle. Our 8oz TATTVE candles are rated for 35 to 40 hours of burn time.
Pure beeswax also carries its own subtle, warm honey scent, entirely natural and entirely from the hive. We add organic virgin coconut oil to our formula for an even, smooth burn, which contributes its own gentle warmth to the aroma. Nothing synthetic, nothing added. Beeswax is also a byproduct of honey production and is harvested without harming the bees. Sourcing from USA bee farms means full supply chain transparency and support for domestic beekeeping.
What to Look for on a Candle Label
The candle industry is largely unregulated when it comes to labeling. A candle labeled natural or clean is not required to be either, as the word natural has no legal definition in this context. A candle labeled soy may still contain paraffin if the primary wax is soy. Fragrance on an ingredient list almost always means synthetic fragrance compounds, not essential oils. If a candle does not disclose its full ingredient list, that is worth questioning.
At TATTVE, our candle labels list every ingredient. No exceptions.
The TATTVE Candle Difference
Our Pure Beeswax Candles are made with three ingredients: 100% pure beeswax, organic virgin coconut oil, and a natural cotton wick. Our scented candles use only pure essential oils, never synthetic fragrance. Every candle is hand-poured in small batches, and every ingredient is chosen with the same intention we bring to our skincare: nothing that does not belong, nothing hidden, nothing compromised.
When you light a TATTVE candle, you are not just creating ambiance. You are choosing a cleaner, more intentional way to bring warmth into your home.
